Dementia-Friendly Education in Metaverse: Open Source Development and Evaluation Using Chutvrc

This paper reports on the development and trial of an educational metaverse for interactive dementia-friendly education. We implemented "N-impro," a game-based teaching material designed to deepen understanding of dementia, into "chutvrc," an open-source educational metaverse platform. Participants could access the metaverse via various devices (PC, smartphone, tablet, HMD) and interact with others in a shared virtual space using avatars. A preliminary, exploratory user study with healthcare professionals and citizens was conducted to evaluate the system's usability and user experience. Results indicate that N-impro ran smoothly in the metaverse, closely mirroring its in-person format. Participants rated the experience positively, though usability still has room for improvement. This work suggests that the metaverse can serve as an innovative and effective educational method for fostering dementia understanding. Future research will compare learning effectiveness with traditional in person formats and investigate how metaverse-specific features might enhance discussion.
